This new school design for Chapman School is designed to replace an aging and undersized school in Sheridan, Oregon. The existing K-8 school has numerous temporary classroom units that are no longer sized to accomodate the projected 750 students of 2003. The new 78,000 square foot school is designed as three small schools within a larger school system. These smaller learning communities have been shown to aid teaching and learning in a more intimate learning environment. The design also places emphasis on natural light in every classroom and office for better productivity as well as energy savings. A new gym, multi-purpose room and commons area are designed to be accessible and available to the community for meetings and events for the community of Sheridan. The school is also designed for expansion in the future. The goal is to provide durable materials and quick construction and keep the building under $110 per square foot.
