Craftsman-style detailing makes a comeback in this new bungalow in Southwest Portland. Simplicity is the key to achieving the details on an affordable budget. The craftsman style theme continues on the interior with period lighting and built-in cabinets. A meandering creek on one side and a driveway easement on the other make the buildable area progressively narrower towards the rear of the house. The design response was to shape the house as an accretion of parts, as though the main volume of the house had been added to over a period of time. Welcoming guests is a large wrap-around porch fronting a quiet brook. Year round enjoyment of the brook is achieved by the broad eaves protecting the porch in the winter and providing summer shade in warmer times. The addition of a light-filled sunroom provides the client an informal living space with the feeling of a the outdoors brought inside.

"The new home you built for us on Canby was so wonderful - exactly what I was hoping for: homey, bright, pretty, and practical. And, just as I asked you, you made it look like an established older home, like it had been there fifty years. You designed my daughter's room and her special loft so that it suited her precisely. Even though she was "only" a kid, you listened to her dreamed of space and created it for her without breaking the bank. One of the things we especially appreciated was that you were never afraid to help the contractor and us understand each other and work things through." Warm regards, |
